Outlook Connector Extensions error

When starting Outlook I get the following error;
“The Add-in ‘Outlook Connector Extensions’ (msncon32.dll) cannot be loaded and has been disabled by Outlook.”

The Outlook Connector is used to connect Windows Live Hotmail accounts. There are a certain scenario’s in which you could get this error.

The Outlook Connector is no longer installed.
When you still have a Windows Live Hotmail account configured in Outlook but no longer have the Outlook Connector installed, then you either need to remove the Windows Live Hotmail account from your mail profile or reinstall the Outlook Connector again.

Download: Outlook Hotmail Connector 32-bit
Download: Outlook Hotmail Connector 64-bit
Note: You will only need to install the 64-bit version when you are using the 64-bit version of Outlook 2010.

The latest version of the Outlook Connector is already installed.
When you already have the latest version of the Outlook Connector installed and you still get this issue, then try the following troubleshooting steps. After each step verify if it is working, if not; continue to the next step.

  1. Reset your extend.dat file by renaming it to .old
    More details about how to do that can be found here.
  2. Enable the add-in manually.
    More details about how to do that can be found here.
  3. Reinstall the Outlook Connector.
  4. Remove the Windows Live Hotmail Account via Tools Account Settings…. Then restart Outlook and add it again via the Outlook Connector menu (which should then be available again).
  5. Do a repair or diagnostic on Office.
    You can initiate that either via;
    • The Help menu in Outlook.
    • By inserting the Office CD and run setup.
    • Windows Vista: Control Panel-> Uninstall a Program
      Windows XP: Control Panel-> Add/Remove Programs
  6. Recreate your mail profile.
